Contains two letters from John M. Crockett (Davy Crockett's son) to Sec. of State John Forsyth, asking for the state's help in investigating the rumor about his father being alive in Mexico. Also, a copy of a letter pub. in the Austin City Gazette from William C. White who claims to have met Davy Crockett in a silver mine in Mexico. A third letter is from Powhatan Ellis to John Crockett, denouncing the rumors of his father's existence after the Alamo. All items dated 1840.

John Forsyth (1780-1841) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on October 22. He graduated from Princeton in 1799 and was admitted to the bar in 1802. In 1808, Forsyth became the Attorney-General of Georgia. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1828. He married Clara Meigs, daughter of Josiah Meigs, who was the first president of Franklin College (later named the University of Georgia). Forsyth died on October 21, 1841.
